Tinos is the third largest island of the Cyclades after Andros and Naxos. It belongs to the northern Cyclades and is situated southeast of Andros and northwest of Mykonos. It has an area of 197 square kilometres and 9,701 inhabitants.
The islands' name is prehellenic and was corrrelated with the phoeonix TANNOTI ( snake) , it was also called Ofioosa ( full of snakes ) which was alleged to have exterminated the patron saint Poseidon.

First the Pelasgians, later the Ionians, the Athenians, the Macedonians, the Ptolemians and finally the Romans. Signs of inhabitance were located on the island even from the neolithic times and earlier in the Geometric and Archaic periods.
Tinos gradually established itself as a Greek religious centre and the Blessed Virgin Mary of Tinos constitutes for an orthodox symbol of faith.
Beaches. Magical deserted with fine, golden sand, some with smooth ,flat stones and with crystal clear waters. Kionia, Agios Fokas, Agios Yiannis Porto, Pahia Ammos, Santa Margarita, Livada, Kolimbithra, Agios Romanos, Koumelas, Agia Thalassa, Kalivia and Ormos Isternion.

ROUTES

There are two basic thruways which criss cross the island, starting from Hora. The first one leads to to the area of Epano Meria in the northeastern part of the island. The second one , after branching off to two main roads, leads to all other parts of the island.

The two basic thoroughfares interconnect, after the first one branches off and passes through the nearest villages of Moundado and Karya, it then meets the second at the spot where the village of Tripotamos is situated. This connecting road passes through tunnels with water and greenery, and at this height one is faced with an amphitheatrical view of Hora and the open sea. Four routes on the island stand out for optimum sightseeing of the island. For the first route we follow the old road to be acquainted with the northeastern part of Tinos with its picturesque villages , the important convent of Kehrovounio, Tsikinia and finally arriving at the bay of Livada.

Beginning our tour we follow the old district road towards Epano Meri which takes us to a branch of the connective road arriving quickly at Moundado, a lovely village which towers above a small deep-green valley. Here we can see the church of Agios Yiannis of Prodromos.Very close by is Karia. Three kilometres further on is Tripotamos with the presentation of the Virgin Mary in the Temple. The modern philosopher K. Kastoriadis lives here.
According to tradition the foundation of the convent at Kehrovounio, was owed to three sisters who originated from Tripopotamo.

We continue towards Epano Meri. In front of us is Ai Nikolaos. Playing the role of a traffic policeman as it separates the area into upper and lower. Straight after we come across the picturesque villages of Berdemiaro and Triantaros.

Despite the fact that many houses here have been bought by foreigners, the traditional Greek style still remains. Arnados is just a short distance from here, the highest village in Tinos. In these villages we find Agious Apostolous, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Ascension. Continuing on, we come across Lihnaftia, one of the loveliest coastal places in Tinos. By path one can reach Kioura, and Agio Ioanni Porto.

There are local bus services to the villages which give tourists enough time to enjoy the landscape.Worth noting are the Ecclesiastical Museum at Arnados and the Holy Convent of Kehrovounio. The Convent is a large group of buildings with many churches. It is devoted to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The cell where the nun Pelagia ( she was appointed a saint in 1970 ) has been preserved. A museum is in operation where old icons and ecclesiastical objects are on display. Another heirloom is a silver-plated icon of the Virgin Mary which belongs to the cannon-firer captain K.Kanari. Later we arrive at the pretty, little villages of Kehro, Jado and Mesi. On the west coast are the villages of Exombourgo, Volax, Koumaro and Kato Meri, further north to Falatado, due east to Steni, Mouslou, Mirsini and Potamia.

On the second route, to begin with we visit the coastal area , west of the town , the archaeological site at Kionio and the cave at Gastrion. Further on, following the new road we arrive at the valley of Tarambados with detailed dovecotes, finally arriving at the bay ofAgios Romanos

The western road leads to the new port crossing the villages of Stavros, Agios Markos and the beach at Kionios. Returning to town to follow the new rural road, four kms further on we arrive at Tripopotamo, on the left slightly further is Ktikado. Here one can also find the oldest belfry of Tinos in the church Timios Stavros (the Holy Cross). Also worth seeing is the church "Presentation of the Lord" which has an icon of the Madonna and an exquisite external marble entrance to the church.

On Easter Monday all the villagers congregate and dine together at a communal table. By slightly bypassing this road one can also visit the picturesque Hatzidiro. The rural road also leads to Kato Meri, Kambo and Oxo Meri. From Kambo the road leads to Smardakito. Immediately afterwards we come to the village of Tarambados , the newest village of Tinos. From here one can go to the Panayia tou Vrisiou and the chapel of Agia Marina.

On the third route following the new road we find ourselves in the heart of Catholic Tinos from Kato Meri to Kolimbithres.

Following the new provincial road and after passing Tripopotamo, we come to the church of Agios Nikitas.

We are now going in the general direction towards Kato Meri. In Ksinara the churches of Panayia Rodaria and Agios Petros and Pavlos are worth a visit. Here the Tinos Catholic Archdiocese is housed. It contains files and ledgers on the Bishops' work in Tinos and correspondance with the Vatican, headquarters of the Roman - Catholic Church. Also documents related to the state and church, archives of ecclesiastical court cases, codes and ledgers of vital statistics.

After Loutra, we come to the village of Skalados.Close by, just one kilometre away is Volax, before we come to Koumaro. This village is built above a gorgeous ravine. Exombourgo is situated here, it is a rocky hill and stands at a height of 640m. Its name comes from Sobborgo which means neighbouring settlement in town. At the foot of this steep hill, the main road bends towards the south, crossing the plateau of Falatado bringing us to Pentostrato.

Krokos is a small village close to Loutra.Just a kilometre away is Sklavohori, where tha artist Nikolaos Gizis was born. Komi is a large village with a guest - house and places to eat. Slightly further on is Agapi and a further four kilometres brings us to the bay of Kolimbithres. The surrounding area offers a choice of five beaches for swimming. At Mikri Kolimbithra there is a hotel, restaurant and cafe - bar.The asphalt - paved road ends in Kalloni, previously known as Kelia. One kilometre away from here is Kato Kleisma and Aetofolia.

During the fourth itinary we will discover the area of Exo Meria with its rich popular architecture and the highest point being the village of Pirgos, an outdoor architectural Museum, to end up in the northern part just one mile away from Andros.

We follow the road towards western Tinos. A further six kilometres brings us to Kardiani. From here we can go to the beaches of Yiannaki and Kalivia. Continuing we come to Isternia and five kilometres further on is Skinaki. After passing the villages of Venardado and Platia one arrives at Pirgos.
