In the heart of the Aegean, Naxos is an island with a long history and strong presence in the creation of Greek civilisation. Naxos was inhabited from pre-historic times. Zeus, father of the Gods of Ancient Greeks, was born in Crete but was raised on Naxos and gave his name to its highest mountain, Za (1004m). Dionysus, God of wine, was involved with Ariadne, goddess of fertility on the island. Their union provided the island with fertile land and flourishing vines.
Tourism on Naxos is developing rapidly. Apart from tourism, the locals also occupy themselves with farming, stock breeding, marble quarrying and commerce. Naxos has the cosmopolitan feel of a modern tourist resort but at the same time, it preserves its traditional colour and culture. There are endless sandy beaches with clear water and many cedar trees along the length of the south and southwest coast and also the north of Naxos, screening beautiful landscape. Lovers of windsurfing will find the island offers ideal conditions in which to practice their sport, especially with the breeze (meltemi) blowing during the summer months. For cycling enthusiasts, Naxos offers inspiring routes. For hikers, nature lovers and those who have a passion for exploring, Naxos is a real paradise with dozens of paths criss-crossing the island. If you have an interest in local life, a visit to the villages is a must where the visitor is treated as an honoured guest. History lovers will be impressed by the wealth of monuments on Naxos. Never has such a concentration of significant monuments from so many different ages been gathered together in such a small area. But for many, holidays are synonymous with night life and there are many choices as Hora, during the summer, does not sleep!
Hora is the capital of Naxos, the administrative centre and the port of the island. It offers all modern facilities, summer and winter. The town's past can be seen in the many monuments in Hora, such as Portara, the archaeological site of Grotta and the Venetian castle. In Hora' one can also visit the Naxos Archaeological Musem. On summer days, a favourite beach is that of Ai Yiorgi (a long beach on the southern side of Hora). However, many will prefer the beach in Grotta, on the northern side of Hora, close to the harbour. In the market in Hora, you will find local crafts, clothes and jewellery. In the dozens of restaurants and snack bars you can taste Greek and local delicacies. As for evening entertainment, there are places for every age and preference.
Hora is connected to all the villages and beaches with frequent public transport.
