DILOS ISLAND

The sacred island of ancient Greeks which according to mythology was made visible in the waves of the Aegean, by Poseidon. Lito who was pursued by Hera gave birth to Apollo and Artemis here. In Dilos ruins in quite good condition have been rescued of one of the largest and most impressive organised settlements of Greekroman antiquity. The island was first inhabited in 3000 B.C , probably by the Kares ( a Greek race) .It was converted at the beginning of the 10th century B.C into a centre of worship at Megali Amfiktonia in the Aegean. At the end of the 6th century B.C the Athenians ruled the holy island. In 540 B.C Pasistratos decided on the first catharsis of the island, while with the second in 426 B.C all the bones of the dead from Dilos and neighbouring island Rinia and births and deaths on the island of Apollo were forbidden so as not to contaminate his temple.

Mykonos DRAFAKI, Mykonos VRYSI, Mykonos GLASTROS, Mykonos PLATI YIALOS

Small, interesting monuments scattered can be seen until recently, on farmland and areas in the south of Hora: in Drafaki ( Paspari), one can see some very old but well maintained chapels. A few years ago in Vrisi an arched grave from the Mycaenian period was uncovered, an unusual find for the Cyclades, with interesting contents which gives evidence of special relations of the island with Greek Mycaenic centres. In the same area there are wonderful dovecotes inside old gardens. In the Mykonos countryside remains of ancient square or round towers have been saved which must have belonged to some sort of island defence system : The tower at Lino, has a diameter of 10m. The tower at Portes which stands above Plati - Yialo which has a much smaller diameter (3,5m. ) is very impressive with its well maintained front door. There are also ancient wells which are still used such as the well "of Yiannaro", an underground tank built in granite stone with a staircase descending into the water. Another one is "Pouados " with steps at the side of it to ensure easy access, it is kept beneath the peripheral road from Tourlos to Korfos, near Tangos.
