Syros is the most highly populated island of the Cyclades with a surface area of 84 sq kms and more than 20,000 inhabitants.
The name Syros comes from the word "Soor" or "Osoora" which means "rocky" in ancient Phoenician.Homer mentions it in "Odyssea" as "Syri". Tha archaeological finds which came to light at the end of the last century in Halandriani, in the northeast of the island, is dated from 2800 B.C., the 2nd period of Early Cycladic civilisation. Graves,idols ,vessels and artefacts were finds from the area and are today displayed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, in the Museum of Cycladic Art Goulandri and in the Syros Archaeological Museum .

ERMOUPOLIS COUNCIL
MiaouliSquare with a bust of Andreas Miaouli (1889) in the centre with its marble bandstand (1907) and a depiction of Apollon and his Muses. The Town Hall, an architectural jewel,designed by the architect Ernest Ziller. Its foundations were laid in in 1876 and it was completed in 1898.
The Archaeological Museum.
Here are on display finds from the Early Cycladic period up until and including Byzantine times.
The Historic Archive of the Cyclades which has archives dated from 1821 and are accessible to visitors or anybody sharing an interest in them.
The Metropolitan church of Metamorphosis of the Saviour. It is a basilica (with a curved end and two rows of columns inside )and chronologically the first church of the island.(1824)
The church of Assumption of the Virgin Mary is also a basilica and known as "Panayia ton Psarianon" and chronologically is the second church of Ermoupolis(1828-29). It houses the famous icon of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, work of Dominic Theotokopoulos(El Greco)
The building of the Merchant Navy Academy at "Nissaki" used to be the first telegraph office in Greece in 1858.
The Customs House- The Transit Warehouses. In the old harbour stand the buildings of the Customs and the Transit Warehouses which were built in 1834. Here, today apart from the Customs House is also the Cycladic Art Gallery which was created in 1994.
The Catholic church of Evangelistria is also a basilica, built at the beginning of the 19th century, it is the catholic parish church of Ermoupolis
The "Apollon " theatre was built between 1862-64, work of the Italian architect Pietro Sampo. Externally very plain, but internally it reveals impressive architecture,immitating Italian originals. It is a miniature copy of Milans' La Scala.
The disrict of Vaporia, here we come across large, 19th century houses of Ermoupolis, considered to be the aristocratical area of the town.Built at a high level with a view over the Aegean sea , there are wonderful neoclassical mansions.
The church of Anastassi of the Saviour. It was built between 1879-1909 on the top of the hill "Dili" on the right-hand side of the town, above the port, it is from Byzantine times, cruciform incorporating a blue dome.
The Karnagio(small shipyard) is the area for construction and repair of small fishing boats which are situated close to the islands' large shipyard.( Neorion)
The" Limokathartirio"( lazarette,hospital for diseased people) on the southern tip of the harbour, in the area known as Lazaretta.It was built in 1834, designed by Weiler, it was initially used as quarantine for travellers who were held there as to protect natives from cholera and other contagious diseases.From the end of the19th century it was used as a prison until the first post - war years and it was also used as an asylum for the insane.During the Cretan revolution in 1866 it was also used as a shelter by Cretan refugees.
