An island of strong opposites Serifos has a natural magnetic force due to its metalliferous rocks which make it an ideal choice for peaceful holidays. It has an area coverage of approximately 75 sq kms ( approximately as large as Syros ) and around 10 kms in total length of beaches.
The capital of Serifos, Hora is magical with windmills and flagged pavements, it is a very beautiful island settlement. The whole island is like a balcony over the Aegean, with a view from the north of Kythnos, Syros from the northeast, due east is Paros , Sifnos from the southeast and Milos due south.
Arrival and departure. Daily from Piraeus by conventional ferry-boat in 4 hours and 15 minutes, or by catamaran in 2 hours and 15 minutes. Departures from Piraeus are in the mornings (except Fridays at 16.00 ) so one can enjoy the whole day, whilst return trips are always in the afternoons. For unfortunate accidents or illness, the island is equipped with a heliport in excellent condition, from where a night-time trip
is also possible.
Serifos was known for its metalliferous layers from mythological times. It was migrated by Viotians and Kings Dikti and Polidekti. From the 6th century BC it had its own currency.
Perseus , the mythical son of Dias and Danae grew up here and as soon as he came of age, to free his mother from the suffocating love that Polidekti had for her, he beheaded Medousa, the terrible monster. Odysseus also called in here on his return to Ithaki, but he didn't live comfortably in the cyclops, Polyfimos's cave, who saw him off marking him with a rock just outside the bay of Koutala. There are still remains of the Cyclops Wall at this point.
Minoans from Crete and Mycenaeans migrated to the island and began operating their mines (Moutoula, Galani ). In the crusade of the Achaeans during Troy though, Serifos shines with its absence. In the middle of the 7th century BC, the island became a colony of the Ionians. Later, Serifos indirectly took part in the crusade of Alexander the Great since all his swords and those of his associates were made of metal from Serifos. Remains of metal from these times still exist in Avessalo.
After the Hellenistic Period Serifos stayed in the background.Due to its need of protection from the Turks, due tois owed to its main settlement, Hora with its houses in a perfectly closed circle. The fortification was completed the 6 heavy gates ("Lotzies") with loopholes on the perimeter.
In the second half of the 19th century Serifos, once again comes into the spotlight with the intense operation of its subsoils from foreign businessmen.
At The Headquarters in Mega Livadi, one of the most beautiful examples of neoclassical architecture in the Aegean, in August of 1916, after scuffles involving miners and security guards, an agreement was signed for the first time in Greece for an eight hour working day, and a union was founded, initiated by Constantine Speras from Serifos.
After the Second World War national markets were on the increase, European countries were toughly competitive with their mineral prices and made the extraction of iron-ore non-economic. Production was reduced and the mines in Serifos closed down completely in 1963. Thousands of metal miners left the island which transformed it from a place of prime production into a high class holiday resort.
