Shinoussa , a small island covering 9.5 square kms, belongs to the group of the small Cyclades. It is situated south of Naxos and northeast of Iraklia. It has a population of just 206 inhabitants.
There is a regular boat service and the journey from Piraeus to Mersini (the port of the island) takes 7 to 9 hours, depending on the type of boat. The intercycladic line connects Syros with Shinoussa every Monday and takes approximately 9 hours, or from Naxos on a daily basis.
Shinoussa has 2 villages, Hora and Messaria. Hora is built on a hill in the middle of the island, 1.2kms from the port, Mersini, which is considered to be one of the best getaways for small boats in the whole of the Aegean. The second village, Messaria, is situated 3 kms from Hora.
Inhabitants occupy themselves with farming, stock breeding, fishing and tourism. Visitors to Shinoussa will enjoy relaxation and tranquility. The stillness of the landscape, the endless blue sea and sky and the warm, friendly faces of the locals, calm body and soul. Shinoussa offers all modern comforts to satisfy the vistors' needs.
The island has been inhabited since ancient times. According to tradition, its name comes from the bushy plant, skino, which thrives all over the island. According to another version, it takes its name from a Venetian nobleman, Schinoza.
Many archaelogical finds on the island indicate that Shinoussa took part in the creation of early Cycladic Greek civilisation, with the centre being the neighbouring island of Kero.
An abundance of ceramic findings and a great number of destroyed churches testify to the rich commercial activities apparent during the Byzantine period. During several historical periods, the island was deserted by its inhabitants due to frequent pirate invasions. From the middle of the 19th century, the island began to be inhabited again, mainly with families from Amorgos.
