Milos is a volcanic island which is situated on the southwesterly edge of the Cyclades, 120kms (75 miles) east of the Lakonian coast. It is 23 kms wide and 13 kms long. The surface area is 151 sq kms. It is horseshoe shaped, forming a large bay. The highest mountain is Prophet Ilias, 748 metres high, on the western side of the island. Nearby islands: Kimolos, 1.6kms north east, Antimilos, 20kms north west, Polyaigos, 2km due west.

Included in Milos are the islets Akrathio, the Ananes, Antimilos (Erimomilos), Akradies, the Paximadi, the Pilonisi and the Prasonisi.

The main port of Milos is Adamas. A smaller port (mainly for transfers between Milos and Kimolos) is Pollonia. The capital of the island is Plaka, which together with Triovassalo, Pera Triovassalo and Tripiti, are built on hills above Adamanta. Another settlement and previous capital of the island is Zefyria. Smaller but picturesque settlements are Klima, Mandrakia and Fyropotamos.

Milos has more than 35 beaches of exceptional beauty.

There is a daily connection by air from Milos to Athens. There are more flights during the summer months (May to October) and a less frequent service in the winter. The flight takes 30 minutes and the airport is 4.5kms from Adamanta.
