The Island of Donoussa in the Eastern Cyclades
Donoussa is the most northerly island of the small Eastern Cyclades. It is situated east of Naxos and north of Amorgos.
It is 13 square kms in area, the ground is stony, forming small bays, in between which are sandy beaches. Stavros, the port and capital, is situated in the south of Donoussa. The other four villages are Kalotarissa, Troulos, Messaria and Mersini.
The name Donoussa dates from ancient times. The island has been inhabited since the Geometric Age, indicated by remains of Geometric settlements which are found in several areas.
According to mythology, Donoussa is the island on which Dionysus hid Ariadne so that Theseus would not find her.
