a little more about andros greece
Andros is the most northerly island of the Cyclades, second to Naxos in area, being 40kms long and 17kms wide. Administratively, it is a district with three municipalities: Andros, Korthi and Hydroussa.
The main port of the island is Gavrio, with frequent connections to Rafina, whilst the ports of Batsi, Hora and Korthi offer facilities for fishing boats, yachts and speed boats.
The island has several rivers and torrents, many with their source in ravines rich with sycamore, walnut and oak trees. In Andros there are paths overgrown with greenery with streams and small waterfalls, traditional cobbled streets which criss-cross the villages in the area, offering unforgettable walks and bringing the visitor close to nature.
Most likely, the name of the island comes from the officer, Andro, from Crete. It was also called Lasia for its thick vegetation or Hydroussa for its abundance of water. "Gavros", an old name which has been preserved from olden times, is also the name of Andros' harbour. Archaeological excavations indicate the existence of developed settlements from the Mycenaean times or even earlier.
The island comes to the forefront of history during the Geometrical Age (9th - 7th century BC), as witnesses by traces of settlements which remain there in Zagora on the southwest coast of the island, close to Zaganiari. The large area of the island, its geographical position, its safe beaches, rich vegetation and plentiful water supply stirred an interest in the island and therefore became popular from early and so from 3000BC, settlements flourished in the areas of "Strofilos" and "Mikroyiali", 2000 - 1500 BC in the area of "Plaka", whilst in 1000 BC Zagora flourished and later Ypsili, which is situated in the area of Aprovato.
The capital of Andros during the Classical Age was Palaiapoli. The prosperity of this period is apparent from the amount of money printed and coins minted. Relevant finds, together with statues of Hermes, are housed in the Archaeological Museum in Hora.
Andros was ruled successively by the Romans, Franks and Ottomans. The Byzantine style of churches like Taxiarhis in Ypsilo, in Melida and in Messaria and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Mesathouri, date from the 11th century AD. In the 14th century, the monastery of Agia (Zoodohos Pigi) was founded close to Batsi, whilst the monastery of Agios Nikolaos had its foundations laid in 1560 and was reconstructed in the 18th century. The monastery of Panahrantou was founded in the middle of the 17th century. From 1813, the first pre-revoloution school was housed in Agia Triada in Korthi.
On the 10th May 1821, Theophilos Kyeris raised the flag of revolution and Andros actively took part in the fight for liberation. In later years, the island developed in commercial navigation. Dimitris Moraitis inaugurated the line from Greece to North America at the beginning of the 20th century, whilst in 1939, Andros was second only to Piraeus in the number of registered ships.
